Course Curriculum
Module 1: Introduction to Emergent Leadership
We often wonder why there is so much attention on leadership and leadership development. The good news is that good leadership makes a material difference in our organizations. The bad news is that we are in short supply of good leadership. In this session, we will discuss what good leadership (and bad), the specifics surrounding emerging leadership, and how it can benefit your organization.
Module 2: Leadership Exposure Programing
For the most part, leaders are developed and not born. However, leaders develop continuously, even when not enrolled in a formal program. Leadership development, by chance, is a gamble; nevertheless, that gamble sometimes pays off. In this session, we discuss a twist on leadership programs and offer a different view on finding your next leaders.
Module 3: Changing Your Context
In its most fundamental way, leadership is a behavior, and its outcome is many coming together to achieve a common goal. Leadership behaviors come in many different forms, as do goals. In this session, we discuss how changing the context of leadership exposes latent leaders in your organizations.
Module 4: A Key Characteristic of an Emergent Leader: Fear
Leadership and fear are not two terms used simultaneously; however, with emergent leaders, it is often fear that separates them from their current circumstances to become great leaders. In this session, we discuss the ‘fear factor' of emergent leaders and how to mitigate this challenge.
Module 5: Getting Past Stuck: Helping Your Emergent Leader
It is fair to suggest that we all have experienced personal and professional plateaus. Whether it is losing weight, getting that next degree, or promoting, we have all felt stuck in our personal and professional lives. A big reason why an emergent leader hasn’t, well, emerged is that they have a feeling of being stuck. This session discusses the characteristics of being stuck and how we can alleviate them for ourselves and our emergent leaders.
Module 6: Shifting Your Leadership Culture
Culture is one of those organizational staples in businesses that grow regardless of nurturing. If that is the case, then it’s reasonable to assume that cultures can be harmful if encouraged. Emergent leadership may be dormant in your organization because you may not have what is required to grow it. In this session, we discuss the three elements of culture, how to see them in your organization and how to
create a new culture that supports emergent leaders.
Module 7: Using Data to find your next Leader
Anytime an organization is looking to transform culturally, it must identify a set of measures and metrics for success. Building an emergent leader culture is no exception. Understanding both lagging and leading indicators are critical to a thriving cultural transformation. In this session, your instructor will discuss the overall analytics world as it pertains to culture, how it also applies to emergent leadership, and some analytics strategies to employ when undergoing a cultural transformation.
Module 8: The Leading Leaders
The most difficult person you will ever lead is yourself. The second most difficult will be an emergent leader because of the obstacles and challenges that emergent leaders face. In this session, we will discuss leadership traits needed to lead emergent leaders, bring them out of the shadows, and transform into a new world of leadership.
