Project Management for Non-Project Managers

Project management is an ever-important competency and the need for those that can lead initiatives is growing. Some studies indicate that more than 80% of today’s work is project based. However, not everyone wants to become a professional, certified project manager.  How can you be better prepared to lead initiatives without the rigor and years of experience required to join the card-carrying ranks of the Project Management Institute?  Do you find yourself in any of these situations:

  • You have several projects you are running at the same time and need to get better at juggling multiple initiatives (in addition to your day job).
  • You are in an organization that is considering replacing its systems (e.g., ERP) and you’ve been nominated to lead the initiative.
  • As a business leader you want to get a better understanding of PM principles and understand how to drive your team to grow, adapt, and succeed.
  • You have been charged with running a project as part of your growth and development, but you are an operational leader and don’t know the first thing about project management.

In the first part of the workshop, we’ll explore the common misconception that project management is an administrative function. Next, we will review the twelve spokes of the project management functional wheel, and we’ll probe three areas to begin our exploration of delivery methods. We will walk through:

  1. What is scope? How can we define it? Why is it important anyway?
  2. How can you begin to build a project plan? What is the difference between a plan and a schedule? Do you need to learn Microsoft Project to be effective?
  3. What makes an effective status report? We’ll learn how to communicate the health of our initiative to our constituents.

You will leave this session with an introductory understanding of the key concepts needed to manage and deliver effectively and understand that project management is more than a certification or using a special template or tool.

Key Takeaways

  • The difference needed to be a project leader instead of a project administrator
  • Common reasons that projects succeed or fail
  • The impact of ‘human skills’ over technical skills
  • An introduction to the basic concepts of project management (The 12 project management functions)
  • Your ability to define scope has a direct impact on the size, shape, and duration of your initiative
  • Tips and tricks for mastering the project management functions
  • How to apply the functions in your environment

Meet Your Workshop Presenter

Carl M. Manello

Partners with and advises senior executives in their large-scale business initiatives, establishing proven practices for operations and governance, and effectively delivering initiatives.  Carl is an experienced executive with over 30 years of line management, program management, and operational experience in hi-tech, manufacturing, insurance, healthcare, and non-profit industries.  As both a corporate employee and a consultant, Carl has served more than 60 organizations (from universities to Fortune 250 companies).  He is an author, blogger, and speaker on project management.

From the Instructor:

I’m a certified project management professional; but it’s not for everyone.  Most people seem to want to get a handle on how to run a project better, provide their leadership, and deliver more effectively.  I’ve written my book, blog and podcast, and have been a speaker on project management for the masses.  If you want to get better, and don’t have time for boot camp, studying for a standardized test, and accumulating 36-60 months of project management experience is not for you, give Project Management for Non-PMs a try.  We’ll get you up and running in no time.
